To determine which e-commerce platform is best, HTTP Archive visits over 13 million websites to perform analysis. But the figures that emerge give unexpected results.
The data gives insights on which type of eCommerce sites are most popular and what kinds of sites use them. The most amazing revelations are in the site performance category, the conclusions the authors reach are the best.
Decline and Increase in Ecommerce Sites
There has been an increase in the number of online eCommerce sites between 2020 and 2021. But according to aggregated data, the percentage of all sites with e-commerce has actually decreased by about 2%.
Ecommerce Platforms Increased
It should be noted that the number of eCommerce platforms detected increased year over year.
Still, WordPress has a huge edge over all other platforms, keeping a 30% share of all mobile e-commerce sites via the WooCommerce plugin. After it, Shopify comes in the second position with a 14% share, which is followed by the open-source PrestaShop platform with a 5% share of all eCommerce sites. WooCommerce/WordPress e-commerce sites comprise about 6% of all sites, with Shopify at about 3% and PrestaShop at just under 1%.

The research shows that 40% of the top ten e-commerce sites are open source or self-hosted.

WooCommerce
WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce plugin for WordPress and it was the most popular platform and several sites were among the top million most popular sites.
PrestaShop
It is an online platform that allows users to create an online shopping cart platform, enabling them to sell products and services to an online audience through the web.
Shopify
There were more sites in the top million that used Shopify (as a percentage) than all other platforms.
Magento
It appears that Magento is popular with enterprise-level e-commerce sites, as more of the top 10,000 users used Magento than other platforms.
Wix
Wix seems to be the choice of local small business sites for e-commerce.

Google’s page speed scoring operates on a scale of 1 to 100. The average page speed for e-commerce sites was 22. A score of 100 for eCommerce sites indicates a high level of page speed and positive user experience. A score of zero essentially represents a dumpster fire.
State of Ecommerce Platforms in 2021
WordPress is currently the leader for a range of e-commerce sites but is clearly not the platform of choice in all categories.
No platform emerged as the overall winner. Each e-commerce platform specializes in servicing a certain level of e-commerce and rests heavily on that focus
